   Frank Mulcrone

 Frank was a member of the Brother Rice  High School swimming and water polo programs all four years. While swimming for the Crusaders, Mulcrone qualified for the state meet from 1988 to 1989. He was named a member of the All-State team all four years, earned the MVP of the State tournament his senior season, as well as earned the Tony Lawless Award for the Chicago Catholic League. Mulcrone was also inducted into the Circle of Champions, the Brother Rice athletic hall of fame in 2013. 

Frank Mulcrone continued his swimming and water polo career at the East Coast powerhouse, Slippery Rock University (SRU), where he was a member of the 1991 NCAA Division 1 Championship qualifying team, finishing 7th in the nation. As a swimmer and a water polo player at SRU, Frank achieved many records and honors, including water polo NCAA Division 1 three-time All American from 1991 to 1993, swimming NCAA Division 2 All-American for the 200-yard freestyle, and a member of the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame. 

“I was coached by two of the best coaches in the country, my father ‘Moose’ and my college coach Doc Hunkler,” Frank said. “They always stressed paying back to the sport after our playing careers ended. Water polo has given me many great opportunities in my life, and I plan on repaying my love of water polo back to the program and players.”

   Tammy Stelnicki


Tammy has 20  plus years of water polo experience. She began playing water polo around age 5 for CAPC and she also played for the Chicago Park District.  She graduated from Saint Ignatius College prep in 2014. During her high school career, Tammy was a varsity starter all four years. She was awarded 4-time MCAC All-Tournament team,  4-time All-Sectional Team, 4-time All-State Team, and was a 3 time All American athlete. In high school, her teams were always competitive at the state tournament with two 3rd place finishes, one runner up, and a State Championship.

In college, Tammy received a scholarship to be a D1 athlete at Arizona State University (a top 5 ranked team in the nation). There, she played alongside world-class athletes from several national teams and learned from the best. 

Tammy has been actively coaching in the IHSA for the past two years as an assistant coach for SICP, and as head coach for CAPC’s club high school girls team.

Matt Stelnicki


Matt’s water polo career began before he can even remember. Growing up, he was dragged around to every pool in Chicago to either play or watch water polo. He was always attending practices or games coached by one of his grandfathers, Jim ‘Moose’ Mulcrone or Phil Stelnicki. Matt played in age group water polo for Ridge Park, CPD and CAPC.

Matt attended Brother Rice High school from 2006-2010. During his career at Rice, Matt competed for both the varsity swimming and water polo teams. During his swimming career Matt qualified for the state swim meet his senior year where he broke a school record in the 100 yard breastroke. For water polo, he was a member of the All-State team two years and earned the Tony Lawless Award his Senior year for the Catholic League. 

Matt continued his swimming and water polo careers at the Division I level for Iona College. During his time at Iona, Matt competed against many of the top ranked teams in the nation. Matt is now back in Chicago and is grateful for the opportunities to coach CAPC and Brother Rice. He believes in the programs and is excited to build the next generation of great water polo players.

Mike Gruszeczki

Mike Gruszeczki began playing water polo for Portage Park. He graduated from Fenwick High School in 1994 where he was a member of 2 Illinois State Championship Swim Teams, 1 Runner-up and 1 Third Place Finish. He was a member of 3 State Championship Water Polo Teams and 1 Runner-up while at Fenwick. In high school, Mike was a member of the United States National Youth Team and competed internationally for Team USA. He also represented the North Zone in the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival. 


Mike coached boy’s water polo at Fenwick High School from 1998 to 2004, starting as an assistant and ending as co-head coach with Dave Perry. While coaching at Fenwick, Mike help guide 5 State Championship teams in 7 years. Mike also coached several club teams at the National Junior Olympics. Mike attended DePaul University College of Law, graduating Cum Laude in 2007. During and after law school, Mike officiated for the IHSA and Collegiate Water Polo Association and called several state tournaments games. He was inducted into the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame in 2007.


Since moving to the Beverly area where Mike lives with his wife Nora and their three children, Mike joined CAPC  with Frank Mulcrone, stating, “I share Frank’s vision of giving back to the sport of water polo. Water polo is a great sport and has provided me with lifelong friendships and positive memories. I look forward to continuing to teach the sport of water polo at CAPC.”

Marcus M. Meyer

Coach Meyer started as an age group swimmer for Hinsdale Swim Club and Westmont Swim Club through high school and college. He was introduced to water polo his freshmen year at Fenwick High School where he learned from Hall of Fame Coaches Dave Perry & Jack Wagner. He went on to be a state qualifier in multiple events in swimming, and he won a State Championship in water polo (under Coaches Dave Perry & Mike Gruszeczki).

 

Coach Meyer then attended the University of Massachusetts as a double varsity athlete in both swimming and water polo. While at UMass, the water polo team had a 3rd & 4th place finish at the D1 NCAA Championships. Coach Meyer finished his collegiate career at Illinois Wesleyan University where he set school records in the 100yrd & 200yrd Breaststroke. 

 

Coach Meyer returned to his alma mater Fenwick High School in 2004 to coach swimming and water polo. During his tenure, the swim team placed 3rd in state and the water polo team won 5 state championships. At the same time, he coached for the Olympic Development Program, where he was named the Midwest Cadet Head Coach from 2007 to 2013 and Awarded Cadet Top Coach for the East/West Regional in 2011. Coach Meyer also coached Windy City Water Polo Club from 2000 thru 2012,  where he spent the majority of the time as the boys high school head coach.  

In 2019, Coach Meyer returned to coaching at CAPC after taking a break to start a family. His sons Michael (10) and Max (8) are both members of the 10U and 12U teams.
